Ontario Premier Doug Ford says he was \u201cshocked\u201d\u00a0Canada wasn\u2019t included\u00a0in U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s 90-day tariff pause.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were shocked that we weren\u2019t part of the group, per se. And you know, (we\u2019re the\u00a0<\/i>United States\u2019)<\/i>\u00a0number one customer —\u00a0w<\/i>e\u2019re both each other\u2019s number one customer — and we need to get through this and bring certainty back to the people of the United States and Canada,” Ford said in an interview with CNN\u2019s Wolf Blitzer on Thursday.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, Trump pumped the brakes on his so-called \u201creciprocal\u201d tariffs announced last week, but kept a 10 per cent baseline tax in place for all countries.<\/p>\n
While Canada was exempt from those levies, the 25 per cent U.S. tariff on autos, steel and aluminum, and goods non-compliant with the North American trade pact\u00a0remain in place.<\/p>\n
Canada has\u00a0hit back\u00a0with its own retaliatory tariffs on $60 billion worth of American goods, and stands prepared to unleash $95 billion more if the U.S. trade war continues.<\/p>\n
Ford has said that while he was relieved Canada was left out of the duties announced last week, the tariffs that remain on Canadian goods are\u00a0unacceptable.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe reality is, a tariff on Canada is a tax on Americans, and that\u2019s the last thing we want to see (for) the American people,\u201d Ford said Thursday, adding that he\u00a0still believes\u00a0the Canadian government would drop its retaliatory tariffs if the U.S. ends the trade war.<\/p>\n
At a provincial level, Ford\u2019s government has introduced a suite of retaliatory measures, including\u00a0pulling U.S, alcohol from LCBO shelves\u00a0and banning American companies from approximately $30 billion in provincial contracts.<\/p>\n
Previously, the Ontario government introduced, and then suspended,\u00a0a 25 per cent surcharge\u00a0on the electricity it sends to three U.S. states.<\/p>\n
Ford said the trade war is having a chilling effect on a number of industries on both sides of the border, but noted that tourism is also being hit hard as\u00a0some Canadians look to spend their vacation dollars outside of the U.S.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
